Every new F1 crossing gets a plot, a season and a share of the labor budget, and most of them will fail. Culling early on a visual impression is risky; keeping everything until the yield trial is expensive. The program pays for that trade-off every year.
PhenoMobile scores every crossing at seedling and vegetative stages, measuring Green Cover, Mean Plant Height, Senescence and Maturity Date, plus growth rate and uniformity between passes. Cloverfield ranks the crossings against the check varieties on comparable indicators.
The weakest crossings are removed at the earliest possible stage on quantitative, comparable indicators rather than a first visual impression, redirecting land, labor and a full season of trial capacity toward material with real commercial potential. Developed on maize with a public research program.
